AUGUST THE MOVIE (4:00)
(87 MB, Quicktime required)

In the beginning of 2005 I made a short film about Captain August using my secret, patented Cheap Animation technique. Spanning a cool 4 minutes, it features the classic premise of the little captain drifting through an endless corridor in search of the bridge. He encounters his various crewmembers who all try to prevent him from meeting his self-imposed objective. The narrative is more a self-contained interpretation of the story with a clear ending instead of neatly fitting into the existing storyline.

Visually I used a combination of hand-drawn characters and 3D backgrounds and objects modelled in Maya. Superimposing the one over the other, I gained an image that closely resembled the comic whilst coming over as fresh and sci-fi at the same time.

The audio was something of a challenge. All the voices were done by myself, something I hope you won't notice too much. The music should be quite familiar, even though I picked less obvious bits and pieces from Beethoven's Ode to Joy. Even though I consciously took this piece, I still wanted to avoid using that overly used-to-death piece you hear everywhere. Ah well, it could have been worse; I could have used Oh Fortuna from Carmina Burana.

Regardless, the music serves to give the film a pretentious air it wouldn't have had otherwise, completely blasting it off the over-the-top scale. Exactly how I like it.

Even in an animation it's clear where my interests lay: in long dialogues that just go on and on and on... saves me a great deal of animating! I sincerely hope you enjoy this short movie. It should give a new spark to the August universe for you and give all your favourite characters a new dimension, with sound, voice and movement.

Have fun!
